FAQ
Questions
Short answers about what FutureWorks is, who it’s for, and how to get involved while the center is still in formation.
What is FutureWorks?
FutureWorks is a planned neighborhood center in Detroit for AI and robotics — an open building with humanoid robots, compute, classrooms, and paths into jobs or ventures. It is a nonprofit organization in formation.
Is it open yet?
Not yet. The site is raising a lead commitment, founding partners, and a physical location. A short pilot may run before a full flagship opens. Until then, this website shares the plan and collects partnership interest.
Who is it for?
Youth, adults, seniors, job-seekers, and founders. Drop-in lab time is meant to be free and open; deeper cohorts and workforce tracks add structure. No degree is required to walk in.
How is this different from Michigan Central, TechTown, or U-M?
Those institutions matter to Detroit’s tech economy. Much of their work is downtown, campus- or degree-oriented, or software-first. FutureWorks is designed as a neighborhood floor for hands-on robots and AI tools — complementary, not a replacement — with a possible Michigan Central satellite later.
What are the six zones?
The Floor (robotics), the Inference Lab (local compute), the Studio (media), the Classrooms, the Commons (gathering), and the Launch Bay (ventures). See The Space or the plan for more detail.
How do programs work?
A ladder: open lab → foundations courses → intensive (often stipended) cohorts → workforce tracks → a job or venture. Teaching stays practical. Need-based stipends are part of the model so people can show up.
Are there stipends?
Intensive cohorts are planned as stipended where funding allows. Foundations courses and open lab are intended to stay free. Exact amounts depend on partners and public workforce dollars.
How can I partner or express donate interest?
Use the partner form on the homepage, or email hello@futureworks.center. We are looking for a $1.5M+ lead commitment, 2–3 founding partners, a site, and pilot approval. FutureWorks is a nonprofit in formation; an EIN will be issued upon incorporation.
Where will it be?
A neighborhood flagship is the priority, with a possible satellite near Michigan Central. No lease is announced yet; site conversations are welcome through the partner form.
How do I contact you?
